Fun Scrapbook Layouts – Freckled Fawn

October 11, 2019

I recently had the pleasure of using the Septemer Kit from Freckled Fawn!  I was really looking forward to trying it out, I have been a long time admirer of Freckled Fawn’s style and have multiple Traveller’s Notebook covers from them.

I made two 9×12 layouts and love them both!  My first one is about Hannah and her red sweater.  I pounced some paint through a stencil for my background and kept the layout fresh by using loads of washi and cute chipboards!

On my next layout I made use of the 6×8 papers in the kit and cut some banners.  I do love a string of banners on a layout!!

The kit comes with a package of wood veneer hearts, I used various colors of stamping ink to color the wood hearts to match the chipboard rainbow heart.  Love how they turned out!

Mixed Media Journal

October 10, 2019

Hello friends! Lorilei here today, sharing a little journal I made after making a big mess (a big fun mess) with the new Vicki Boutin Pigment Powders and Molding Paste! I added some gesso and my favourite gold glaze!

I gathered random bits of papers – Kraft paper, printer paper, doilies, tags, envelopes, brown bag and chose two greeting cards from the Wildflower and Honey collection as well. I spread the papers out on my desk and began adding molding paste that I coloured with the two pink pigment powders. I used a palette knife to randomly scrape paint onto the papers and asst paper items.

As I switch products, I dry the stack of papers in between, by ruffling them around and lifting and moving them. I added gesso with a palette knife as well as the gold glaze. Once I had all the paint and splatters I wanted on the pages, I added bits of masking tape and drywall tape for texture. I also used the bee stamp from the Wildflower & Honey stamp set to make customized tissue paper! I love having it to add to the finished pages using the Vicki Boutin Gel Medium to adhere to it.

I love the feel of all the different types of media on the pages! The pink pigment powder is such a lovely colour!

Once my pages were all dry, I sorted them into stacks and then folded them into journal signatures. I made myself a journal cover from cardboard and a cloth napkin I had laying under my stack of papers to catch the paint. I added elastics to the spine and inserted my signatures in a traveller’s notebook style. I can still pull a page out to stitch on it when I fill the journal up.

I have made a video of the process; it shows it much better!!

Thanks so much for joining me today and having a look at my project! I do find great joy in just making a happy mess!

Hey Pumpkin Mixed Media Layout – Crate Paper

October 9, 2019

Hello Crate Paper friends!  Happy Spooky October!!  I am excited to share my layout using Hey Pumpkin today.  I adore this collection!  In my opinion, Hey Pumpkin is classically Halloweenish with fun colours and a modern twist! My layout today was inspired by the holographic Hocus Pocus Thickers.  I love the fun icons and shiny foil surface!

I started by cutting a spider web heart cut file (by Paige Evans) from white cardstock.  I scraped Vicki Boutin Silver Texture Paste over the entire spider web onto another sheet of white cardstock.  I was careful to lift it as I went so it wouldn’t stick to the paper underneath.  I wasn’t sure if I would use the under paper at this point, but wanted to have the choice!  You could scrape texture paste over a cut file on a Sticky Thumb Splat Mat by American Crafts and then you wouldn’t have to worry about it sticking to the surface below!

Next, I spent some time adding paint splatters to the full textured background.  I decided it was too pretty not to use!  I mixed up a colour that was close to the pale pink/peach colour in Hey Pumpkin and also added some yellow, pinkish-orange and mint green splatters. Once everything had dried, I added a couple of layers of holographic tulle on top of my spider web and stitched it onto the background with my sewing machine.  Next, I added my vertical 4×6 photo and two tags from the Hey Pumpkin Ephemera Pack.  I added some black and white baker’s twine to the tags for additional texture, and I always love to put some type of string through a tag!

I found the Spooky H die-cut in the ephemera pack, and since my daughter’s name is Hannah, it served two purposes! I filled in the bottom of the H ticket with a pumpkin sticker and a crow sticker.  For finishing touches, I added loads of holographic stars, a pumpkin and the Eek! The sentiment below the photo.  You can see in the photo below I offset the spiderweb when I stitched it on so that the background could show through the open spaces!

I love my layout, and I hope you find some inspiration in it for your project!  If you need a quick start to your next project, you could try picking out one item you love (like I did with the holographic Thickers) and build your idea around it!  Thanks so much for joining me today!  Happy creating!

Grateful Layout using a Sketch – Citrus Twist Kits

October 6, 2019

Happy Sunday!  Lorilei here today sharing a layout I made with the colourful and vibrant October Add-On kit!  I am using a sketch today for my layout, and I decided to go with the Truly Grateful part of the Add-On kit!

Here is a look at the sketch I will be using

I stuck pretty close to the main layout of the sketch, as I love the design.  Using a sketch made my layout come together super quickly!  My first step was to select a photo and then get started!

I trimmed Paper 6 into the largest mat following the sketch; I added a photo mat using the Amy Tangerine “Slice of Life” paper (b-side). The pink paper beneath the embellishment is the b-side of Paper 6.

Once I had my papers trimmed up, I added some paint splatters to my background using pink and gold spray mist.  When the paint had dried, I added my paper stacks to the background.  I chose the stay golden die cut from the Truly Grateful Ephemera Pack and a large floral as well.  I decided to fussy cut some leaves from Paper 23 for extra embellishments!  I also fussy cut one butterfly from Paper 5.  I added little sequins to the wings of the butterfly from the Sparkle kit!

To finish up, I added one of the gorgeous puffy words as my title and scattered the leaves above and below the focal point area on the sketch!  I love how my layout turned out!

I’d love for you to try the sketch!  I can imagine many lovely ways to use it with the October Add-On kit!  Thanks so much for stopping by today!

Pockets on Your Scrapbook Layout – Vicki Boutin

October 3, 2019

Hello friends!  Lorilei here today with a new scrapbook layout using Vicki’s Wildflower & Honey collection!  This week I was given a pocket page assignment and might have gone a bit off the plot.  Instead of using a pocket page, I made pockets for my layout!

I started my page by making three pockets from the striped Sweet Honey paper.  My pockets are 3.25″ wide by about 3.75″ high.  I folded over 1/2″ on three sides to form a simple pocket.  I chose a 12×12 paper from Vicki’s pre-made Mixed Media paper pad in the pretty blue with gold foil splatters for my background.  The rope around my fence post in the photo was the reason I selected a blue background!

I added the three pockets to the center of the paper and offset them a little bit. It was super fun to fill the pockets; I used notecards from the ephemera pack, journal cards I trimmed from the cut-apart Mingle paper to slip inside the pockets.  I added one of my photos to the middle pocket and also added a photo on top of the middle pocket.  I had some fussy cut flowers left over from my last scrapbook page, so I added one to each of the side pockets.

I chose some more die cuts to add to the outside of the pockets, and for each new die-cut, I added some foam behind it for lots of dimension!  In the right pocket, I added two of the super sweet flowers, and a leaf die cut tucked under the label on this pocket.

Since most of the work was done for me, by using a pre-made mixed media paper, I added some little strips of Wildflower & Honey washi tape under each pocket and some holographic black star stickers for a bit of sparkle!  I used a variety of chipboard and sticker sentiments to embellish the labels and tabs on the page.

Thank you for joining me today!  If you’ve never added a pocket to your layouts, you might want to give it a try!  They are fun to add all kinds of items too and a great place for secret journaling!!

Hello Fall with Maggie Holmes Heritage Collection – Crate Paper

September 30, 2019

Hello Crate Paper friends!  Lorilei here today sharing a fall feeling scrapbook layout!  I used the Maggie Holmes Heritage collection with its warm, rich tones and beautiful images!

I started my layout with a white background and chose a matching colour of spray ink to the lavender house from the Heritage chipboard sheet.  I puddled the paint around in a large area and added splatters to the outside edge.  I backed a large cut file with the wood grain Lifetime paper (my favourite!) and adhered it to the dry painted background with adhesive foam for some dimension and shadow!

I spent most of my time on this layout embellishing!  If you are like me, that is often your favourite part of putting together a scrapbook layout.  I knew I wanted lots of florals so I first fussy cut some warm yellow flowers from the Margaret paper.  On the right side of the wood grain title, I started with the chipboard house that was my inspiration.  I added some fussy cut flowers and leaves and then fussy cut the family banner from the Recollection paper.  The deep forest greens and warm gold florals remind me of fall!  I added a chipboard label to finish off the cluster of embellishments!

On the left side of the layout is where I added my photo.  Every fall we try to get outside and take a photo with the fall colours!  I added more fussy cut flowers above and beneath the photo and to keep the clusters balanced; I chose smaller scale embellishments since the photo size already balanced the left side of the title.  I chose a small chipboard flower in the same lavender tone as the house and then cut a stamp featuring a deer from the Postmarked paper.  I stumbled on the sweet little chipboard heart on the Heritage chipboard sheet, and it was the perfect embellishment to finish off my right cluster!

My last touch was to add three of the paper flower roses from the Heritage Embellishment set.  I twirled the green wire stem around a small paint brush for a curlicue and added the flowers with American Crafts PVA liquid adhesive to keep them in place!

I absolutely love how my page turned out.  The wood grain paper and warm colours from the co-ordinating papers and chipboard instantly gave me the feeling of fall that I wanted for my photo.   Thank you so much for joining me today!  Happy fall scrapbooking and crafting!

Tiny Moments Mixed Media Scrapbook Layout – Vicki Boutin

September 26, 2019

Hello!  Lorilei here today sharing a scrapbook layout focusing on the pretty papers in the gorgeous Wildflower & Honey collection by Vicki Boutin and American Crafts!

We were given the challenge to use papers from the collection, and the Hive and Full Bloom paper caught my eye, so I went with them!  Of course, I immediately started fussy cutting the florals from the Full Bloom paper!  I also decided to cut the Hive paper into a long strip with bits of the hive coming off the strip.  I selected a white background paper and started hatching a plan for the page.  I wanted the colour of the full bloom paper to blend into the white, so I reached for the Neutral Art Crayons and started mixing.  I ended up using lots of white, a touch of black and then one scribble of the rust coloured Art Crayon made the perfect colour to match the floral tones.  I used packaging and splattering on the background to apply the colour.  I also added splatters of grey for some interest.

Once my background was dry, I added my strip of hive paper and the individual hive pieces.

I added my photo with a foam backing for dimension and began tucking my fussy cut Full Bloom florals around the photo.

I added the chipboard tassel banner, chipboard sentiment and chipboard bees around the layout, I love the shine of the foil on those pieces, it adds a little touch of glamour!  The layout came together rather quickly and using the papers added so much interest and detail!

Thanks so much for joining me today!  Be sure to check out the lovely double-sided papers available with Wildflower & Honey.  The 12×12 paper pad is a great resource and also included double-sided papers!  Have a great day!

Metallic Floral Layout – Vicki Boutin

September 19, 2019

Hello!  Lorilei here today sharing a layout featuring the new Metallic Ink Color Wheel Ink Pad by Vicki Boutin.  The Inkpad was released with the Wildflower & Honey collection and couldn’t be a better accompaniment to the collection! It was a natural fit for me to use the new stamp set as well for my layout!

I started with a 12×12 piece of Foundations Mixed Media paper and chose the neutral Art Crayon set for my background.  I covered the paper with a thin layer of Vicki Boutin Gel Medium and let that dry.  I added a mix of black and white Art Crayon with some packaging and also added splatters with a brush.  The Art Crayon made a cool effect on the Gel Medium, separating a bit, which I love!  I had an idea of the shape I wanted for the background, but I am always ok to switch it up depending on what the paint decides to do!

While my background was air drying, I stamped loads of flowers and leaves onto plain thick cardstock with the metallic ink wheel.  I used all the ink colours as they blend so beautifully together!  I did a mixture of fussy cutting and cutting using the included die with the stamps.  One tip I can share is to allow some time for the metallic ink to dry once you stamp with it.  It takes a bit longer to dry than the other colour wheel inks.

Once everything had dried, I added the same stamps on top of the background with the metallic inks.  This will give me a fuller look to my fussy cut florals and add additional texture!  I placed my photo next and began to adhere all my florals and leaves.  I started at the top right of the page and trailed them down to the bottom left corner.  I usually add diagonal designs from left to right; it was fun to change things up!

I found a gorgeous chipboard sentiment from the Wildflower & Honey collection and added that beneath my photo, that gave me a great spot to add a puffy gold phrase for my title!  I tied the gold together by adding puffy gold hearts, throughout the floral trail!

I do love a neutral scrapbook layout.  The neutral Art Crayons are one of my favourite supplies, and I am glad to have a gorgeous ink set to go right along with them.

Gather Scrapbook Layout – Citrus Twist Kits

September 18, 2019

Hello!  Lorilei here today sharing a 9×12 scrapbook layout I made using the gorgeous September 2019 Citrus Twist Add-on Kit!  The kit features some of the lovely Heritage collection by Maggie Holmes and Crate Paper, and that is what I used on my layout!

I started with a white background cut down to 8.5 x 11.5 and placed that on the Keepsake paper.  I chose a 6×4 photo for my layout, even the cows across the lane need to be scrapbooked right?  Before I adhered my photo, I added my title using the Spencer stamp set.  I love the large font in this stamp set, and I am sure I will use it often!

Next up I fussy cut lots of flowers from the Margaret paper.  I decided on a vertical design and added flowers to the top and bottom of the page.  This design is handy as you can use the flowers on the edges of the papers and the straight border helps to line them up!

I added the butterfly from the Heritage Ephemera pack included in the September 2019 Add-on kit and then found a label in my Sept. Life Crated kit for the top of the page.  I couldn’t resist stamping “Farm Fresh” on the label using the Sept. 2019 Life-Crafted Travelers Notebook stamp set!

Thank you so much for joining me today!  Be sure to check out the Sept. 2019 Add-0n Scrapbook kit!

5 Ways to Add Interest to your Mini Albums – Crate Paper

September 16, 2019

Hello Crate Paper friends! Lorilei here today sharing five tips and ideas for adding custom and interesting touches to your mini albums!  I think it adds a unique flair and as a bonus they ideas are creatively fun!

I am using the Sunny Days for my mini album today, the five tips and ideas could be used with any of your favorite Crate Paper collections!

#1. Add Interest and Extra Goodies with Pockets

  • Add a pocket to the backside of your mini album cover.  I made mine by measuring the cover and cutting a paper from the 6×8 Sunny Days paper pad.  I then cut two more pieces of paper at shorter lengths to create “pockets” and stitched down the two long sides and bottom to hold the pocket together and adhere it to the back cover with strong adhesive.
  • Decorate the front of the pocket with chipboard and die cuts, add cards, ephemera die cuts and notes to the pockets.  It is surprising just how much the pockets will hold!
  • At the back of the mini-album, I created a page with pockets the same way, except that I punch holes in the page once I had stitched it together.  If you don’t use a sewing machine on your projects, you can assemble the pocket with a thin line of liquid glue or use red tape!

#2. Create Interesting Pages

  • Create your papers and pages with paint!  I used the pink paint from the Sunny Days Acrylic Paint set and added simple big dots to white card stock.  You can get super creative with splatters, puddling paint, or using stencils.  I find painted papers add an instant hand-created feel to a mini-album, plus they are fun to make!
  • Create envelopes from coordinating patterned papers.  My daughter has a WeRMemory Keeps Envelope Board, and she created a 6×4 envelope for my mini album from the Sunny Days Collected paper.  I simply punched holes in the bottom of the envelope and added it into the mini-album.  Envelopes are a fun way to keep extra journaling, photos or ephemera.
  • Add interest with varying page sizes.  I love to see the layers in a mini album and to vary the page size is a sure-fire way to add interest!  My album is 5×7, my smallest page is 4×4 and varies from there.  There are always so many gorgeous patterned papers in the Crate Paper collections and varying the page size gives you a peek at all of them layered together in a mini album!

#3. Handmade Embellishments

  • Creating your own embellishments adds so much uniqueness to a mini album.  Making embellishments is one of my favorite things to do in crafting!  I often look to Crate Paper and Maggie Holmes embellishments for ideas and use what I have to re-create them.
  • I made prize ribbons for this mini album using Sunny Days paper with a couple of Willow Lane scraps added in.  I used punches to create the layers of circles and cut the banners to a shape inspired by Willow Lane embellishments.  The addition of the Sunny Days jewels adds sparkle and interest as well!
  • I created some unique paper clips by adhering chipboard pieces to large gold clips.  I use a glue gun for this and pop a punched circle on the back of the chipboard shape to keep it neat and tidy!

#4. Create Page Tabs

  • I love texture and layers, having pieces sticking out from the edges of the pages of a mini-album is one of my favorite items to include.  It feels lovely when you handle the album and also gives the viewer a way to flip the pages!
  • Create tabs with punches or hand-cut them.  I cut 1 or 1.5″ strips of paper, folded them in half and rounded the corners with a punch.  I used my sewing machine to stitch them onto the pages (tape or glue works too!)
  • Vary the size and colors of tabs.
  • Add stickers and sentiments to the tabs that are specific to the page they are on or add general sentiments and words that co-ordinate with the entire album.  The Sunny Days Sticker book has some awesome clear stickers that look cool over patterned paper!
  • Use tags for tabs; Sunny Days has so many cute tags on the Happy Place paper!
  • Vary the position of the tags on the page.  You’ll notice I staggered the tags so that I could see most of them at the same time!

#5. Add a Mini to your Mini

  • I created a simple pocket page by cutting the paper 2.5″-3″ longer than the finished page size and folded up the bottom and adhered the two sides.
  • I think it is a fun surprise and an interesting idea to add a little mini tag album to your mini album!  I collected fussy cut tags, die-cut tags and added them to a small book ring and tucked it into the pocket!
  • You could put together a small notebook made from papers to tuck into the pocket as well.
  • It’s a great way to include more photos or another story to the theme of your mini album!

I hope you enjoyed my tips and ideas today and incorporate some or all of them into your next mini album!  I find it fun and relaxing to play and create with the beautiful pieces and papers!  Happy Creating with Crate!

Whimsical Traveler’s Notebook Pages – Technique Tuesday

September 15, 2019

Hello!  I am sharing a sweet, fun set of pages I made in my Traveler’s Notebook Album.  I received a super cute stamp and die bundle from Technique Tuesday called Love Home Stamp Set & Build a Birdhouse Crafting Dies. I knew right away. I wanted to make cute colourful birdhouses and started with that idea!

I die cut the birdhouses from thick white cardstock six times so that I had plenty of pieces to work with.  I chose distress inks and distress oxides to colour the white pieces.  My daughter took over the colouring of all the pieces after I did the first one!  Yay for crafty help!  We used round blending tools with multiple colours for a bright, fresh look!  The pieces cut so crisply with the die set and it was really easy to build the houses, there are plenty of ways you could build a birdhouse!

I added some more Distress Ink to my background papers and made myself a bit of a blue sky with clouds background.  I love how the birdhouses pop with the sky background.

I adhered all the birdhouses to my pages and added strips of black paper for “poles” I found some Pebbles floral stickers in my stash, two bunnies from Dear Lizzy and a set of books from a Paige Evans collection for decoration!  My finishing touch was to choose two stamps from the Love Home Stamp Set, and I added one directly to my right page and added the second stamp to white cardstock cut into a banner shape.  There are so many cute sentiments in this stamp set!  Super great for cards as well!  You can find all sorts of unique stamp sets and supplies at Technique Tuesday’s Scrapbook supplies page!  Thanks for checking out my pages today!

Favorite Moment Layout – Vicki Boutin

September 12, 2019

Hello!  Lorilei here today sharing a layout I made using our Moodboard this week as inspiration! My attention was captured by the bright paint splatters and the pretty photo of the flowers; I love the whole mood board actually! You can find the moodboard on Vicki’s blog!

I chose a photo I took outside on our lane a few years ago and used the blues, golds and pinks as my jumping-off point for colour!

I have wanted to try the pre-made mixed paper pad, so I started by looking through the paper pad for the perfect background.  I chose the paper with the four vertical paint, “swipes.”  The yellow in the paper didn’t suit my idea, so I swiped some gesso over the yellow with a palette knife and let that dry.  I then added a diluted wash of Blue Hawaiin Watercolor Marker over the gesso area and also added some washes of Art Crayon to enhance the washes already on the paper for my colour choices.  It worked well to change the one colour and add some extra splatters and colour!

While the background was drying I fussy cut some of the gorgeous vellum butterflies from the Wildflower & Honey specialty paper.  I chose the blue, red/pink and orange butterflies to add to the layout!  For a nice focal point beside my photo, I found this pretty kraft tag with the perfect pink shade on it.  I popped up the teal heart on the tag and added a chipboard sentiment.  You can find the tag and chipboard from Wildflower & Honey.

I added foam dots to the butterflies for the lovely dimension!  The gold foil detail on the butterflies is stunning!

I love how my page turned out!  I encourage you to be inspired by the mood board and see what you come up with!  I also recommend playing with the pre-made mixed media paper pad, it’s amazing!!

Thank you so much for stopping in today!
